Overview
Local characters (ご当地キャラ) are local and regional mascot characters for local companies, local governments, ect.
In recent years, in particular, moe characters have emerged to replace the yuru-chara mascots that once dominated the market.
The market size is enormous. While the average annual economic impact of a professional baseball game is estimated to be about 50 billion yen (including championship sales), it is estimated to be 2 trillion yen, about 40 times that of a baseball game.
This is 200 times greater than the economic impact of the yuru-chara mascots that were created throughout Japan during the yuru-chara Sengoku Era.
Originally, there was a culture of "pilgrimages to sacred places" where people visit the places where television anime works were set, but now there are large-scale festivals exclusively for local moe characters, and stage tours are being planned and promoted in collaboration with the Cabinet Office and the Japan Tourism Agency, showing the rapid growth of this industry.
